Dental phobia is an intense fear of visiting the dentist — often so severe that it causes people to avoid check-ups, treatment, or even thinking about dental care altogether. For some, this fear stems from a past traumatic experience. For others, it’s linked to fear of pain, lack of control, or embarrassment.
At Dentistry on Gipsy Hill, we understand that dental anxiety is real. That’s why we’ve created a gentle, private, and supportive environment specifically for nervous patients. We work at your pace, never rush, and offer tailored support — from therapy to sedation — to help you regain confidence and control over your dental health.
Common Symptoms of Dental Phobia
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Breathlessness or rapid heart rate
- Nausea or upset stomach
- Sweating or shaking
- Feeling panicked, frozen, or overwhelmed
- Avoidance of dental care for years
Dental phobia can deeply affect your health, confidence and quality of life — but with the right support, it can be overcome.
We start with a private 45-minute consultation with our resident psychotherapist. You’ll discuss your specific fears, triggers and goals in a safe, non-judgmental space. This helps us build a tailored plan based on your personal needs.
Over two consecutive sessions (90 minutes total), we use a combination of CBT and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) to help reframe your thoughts, reduce fear, and develop practical coping strategies for the dental environment.
Once you’re feeling more prepared, you can choose one of two paths:
Everything is designed to help you feel safe, seen, and supported.
We’re not just dentists — we’re listeners, problem-solvers and partners in your wellbeing. Our team is warm, calm and trauma-aware, and we’ll never judge your dental history. Whether it’s been six months or six years since your last appointment, we’ll help you take the first step with confidence.
Our supportive approach is trusted by patients across Gipsy Hill, Crystal Palace, SE19 and South London who previously thought they’d never return to the dentist.
You are not alone — and you are not beyond help.
That’s okay. We see many patients in your situation. You won’t be judged, and we’ll take everything one step at a time.
Not at all. If you’re ready to speak with a dentist, we’ll guide you gently. But for many patients, therapy offers an essential first step in overcoming fear.
Never. You’re in control. We only move forward with your full understanding and consent — at your pace.
Yes. We can discuss sedation options once you’re comfortable and ready to explore treatment.
