Professional teeth whitening is a quick and effective way to enhance the brightness of your smile. However, while the results can be dazzling, they won’t stay pearly white forever—especially if you continue with habits that stain your teeth. To maintain your newly whitened smile, following an aftercare routine is essential, particularly in the first 48 hours following your procedure.
Teeth are naturally covered with a protective layer called the acquired pellicle, which helps shield the sensitive parts of the tooth and prevents stains from adhering. However, teeth whitening and dental cleaning temporarily remove this barrier, opening the pores of the enamel and making your teeth more susceptible to stains. This layer regenerates after about 24 hours, but for the first two days, your teeth are especially vulnerable. This is why following proper aftercare is crucial for extending the results of your whitening treatment.
In the 48 hours after your whitening treatment, it’s important to avoid certain foods and drinks that can easily stain your teeth or contribute to enamel damage. Some of the main culprits to steer clear of include:
These foods and beverages not only counteract the effects of whitening, but they can also lead to long-term staining and decay. During this sensitive period, your teeth are more vulnerable, so it’s best to avoid them as much as possible.
If you do indulge in something that could stain your teeth, such as coffee or red wine, rinse your mouth with water immediately. If you’re on the go, chewing sugar-free gum within 20 minutes can help to neutralise acids and freshen your breath.
Additionally, be mindful of the temperature of the food and drinks you consume. After whitening, your teeth may be more sensitive to hot or cold sensations, so it’s best to avoid extreme temperatures. Opt for lukewarm or room-temperature beverages and meals for a few days, and consider using anti-sensitivity toothpaste.
